Madison’s entire downtown was placed in the National Register of
Historic Places (1973).

Shrewsbury-Windle House and J.F.D. Lanier State Historic Site were designated
National Historic Landmark Properties by the National Park Service (1994).

Highway 56 (Madison’s Main Street) was designated a
National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Department of Transportation. (1999)

Madison was one of the three Main Street Pilot Project
Communities selected by the National Trust for Historic Preservation (1976).

Madison was one of twelve Communities in the country selected as
a Distinctive Destination by the National Trust for Historic Preservation
